Joe Scibilia is an American musician best known for as the bass player for the pop punk band Last Great Hope which went on to play on three Vans Warped Tours, a tour with Dead Kennedys and Countless others. He was also a member of the hard rock band Big Machine, a project put together by guitarist/producer Doug Kaye and AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson.
He is the creator of the music website CoffeeStain.com (1998-2004), a website dedicated to the Florida music scene. During that time he created the streaming radio show called CoffeeStain Radio.
During my early career, I started playing bass in various garage bands. In 1992 I formed Peppermint Skydiver and the band went on to sign with a small indie label out of Michigan. We entered the studio to record our first record titled “Paper Sunshine”. Unfortunately the label went under before the record could be released and the band disbanded. In 2020 we finally gave “Paper Sunshine” it’s proper release and the record is now available on all digital platforms.
In 2004 I got a call from long time friend and No Fraud drummer, Walter Rossmann. I was asked to come audition for a new pop punk band he was putting together with former No Fraud bassist Doug Burns. I joined the band and Last Great hope was born. We went on to release our debut record titled “Creatures of Beauty” on Handout Records. We toured in support of the record playing the 2005 Vans Warped Tour as well as a tour supporting punk rock legends Dead Kennedys and supporting shows with Authority Zero, Angry Samoans, and The Queers to name a few. In 2006 We released our second record titled “Like A revolution” on Stiff Pole Records. In support of the record, we went on to play various stops on the 2006 and 2007 Vans Warped Tour and continued to support the release playing alongside Lit, The Riverboat Gamblers, Plain White T’s, and The Almost.
In 2005, while in Last Great Hope, I was asked by producer/guitarist Doug Kaye to join a musical project being put together by Kaye and AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson called Big Machine. I accepted and was joined by Kaye, Last Great Hope guitarist Donny Hough, Juliet drummer Jeff Klosterman and Neurotica / Atheist frontman Kelly Shaefer. We performed our first show in front of a sold out crowd at Club Chrome in Sarasota, FL in 2005. Johnson performed AC/DC classics Back in Black and Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap with the band at the show. The Big Machine demo caught the attention of New York music law firm Selvern, Mandelbaum, And Mintz who have represented bands such as Van Halen, Guns N’ Roses, The Wu-Tang Clan and Celine Dion. The firm flew down to attend our first show and quickly signed the band. Soon after, we played a showcase for industry reps at the iconic CBGB’s in New York City. Unable to come to an agreement with various labels, the band parted ways in 2006.
Coming soon is a new project I have been working called Villain Press. Villain Press consists of myself on bass guitar, Jason McMaster (Dangerous Toys) on vocals, Paul Lidel (Dirty Looks, Dangerous Toys) on guitar and drummer/producer Adam Hamilton (L.A. Guns).
